NEW INC x SXSW 2016

If a keynote address from President Obama isn't enough to draw you down to Austin this weekend— we know what will! A schedule full of events involving NEW INC members, advisors, alum, and staff. From panels to installations, reports to pitches, here's where you can find NEW INC represented at South By Southwest in 2016:

Our advisor John Maeda needs no introduction — but his newest Design in Tech report does. Join him for the release of the latest version of his annual digital tome on Monday, March 14 from 12:30-1:30PM at the JW Mariott, Salon E (Get in with the Interactive Badge.)

How can alternative methods of education, like let’s say, the incubator model, reinvigorate stodgy institutionalized learning? NEW INC Director Julia Kaganskiy is adding her two cents with the panel “Can Incubators Make Universities Relevant Again?” Attend with the Interactive Badge on Saturday, March 12 from 12:30-1:30 PM at the JW Marriott, Salon 7.

Dave and Gabe are making their mark, designing an interactive music installation for Deloitte Digital called ARC - Audience Reactive Composition. Open at Palm Door on Sixth, March 11 and 12, the installation will enable visitors to perform together regardless of each person’s musical experience. Featuring a composition by Grammy-nominated artist RAC, they’ll be able to control the melodies, rhythms, and sounds of music inside an audio and light system. The Deloitte Digital space is hosting a variety of events and parties, so browse through them and RSVP here.

Alum Sougwen Chung is joining in on the fun with a talk on her project D.O.U.G. for American Greetings "Analog" event. Part of three-day event put on at 325 East 6th Street, Sougwen will be featured on Saturday, March 12 at 12:30 with "ANALOG TALK: A Human and Robot Play a Drawing Game" — RSVP here.

NEW INC’s resident wearable tech guru Sabine Seymour will take a hard stance on hard versus soft technologies as part of the panel “Soft Wearable Technology for Fashion” on Saturday, March 12, from 5:00-6:00 PM at The Westin Austin Downtown, Continental Room 1-2, use your Interactive Badge to attend.

Plus, Sabine is doubling down at Austin by presenting Moonlab’s Softspot at The Dolphin Tank, a fashion + tech pitchfest put on by Springboard Enterprises and The New York Fashion Tech Lab. That one is on March 13 at 3:00 PM in the Dell Lounge @ Brass House — the event is sold out, but you can join the waitlist here.

Another NEW INC alumni, PARTY, will be debuting their new product Song Wig at the SXSW Trade Show, open to all passes from March 13-16 in the Austin Convention Center. Not sure how to find them? Just look for a bunch of people dancing, plugged into a human music box in the shape of a wig — you won't miss it. (Also it's booth 1623.)

VolvoxLabs has partnered with Magnetic Collaborative, ShowFX! and David Crumley to create an LED light installation for HP at Cedar Door @ 201 Brazos Street — home of the Fast Company Grill. The space will be host to a whole series of invite-only events from March 11-15.

On March 13, Jacob Gordon pitches the Artiphon INSTRUMENT 1 at Hatch Pitch, a juried event with the aim of supporting companies striving to make life better. You can attend starting at 11:30 AM at Ballet Austin, tickets here. He’ll also be jamming out with a demo at The Fader Fort 2016, an interactive invite-only arcade for the intersection of music and technology, on March 14 and 15.

The Spotify House is going strong for another year, turning 1501 E 6th St into an immersive world full of multimedia partnerships. If you’re feeling like you need a high-calorie burn after all that BBQ and tacos, take a spin through the SoulCycle Experience, where VolvoxLabs (with the help of NEW INC Project Manager Alex Darby) has helped craft a ‘cardioparty’ fueled by a responsive 360 projection mapping experience (March 14-18, RSVP here).

Speaking of The Spotify House, pay particular attention on March 17, when members Reify, Charlie Whitney, and Philip Sierzega unveil an immersive experience promoting Syfy’s new thriller, “Hunters.”

We hope to see you at some of these events during the festival next week! Bon voyage for now — see you a lot more inspired and probably a little more dehydrated in a couple of weeks ;)
